2.3 Design

The design uses a low power VHF oscillator amplified to 1 watt of power and is phase locked via a divider chain to a reference oscillator. The 1 watt signal is filtered to the permitted levels and produces RF at the final RF output. This is housed in an aluminum fully screened enclosure to protect the user from direct contact with RF voltages and to prevent unwanted emissions, local interference and provide the RF unit with adequate immunity for the proper operation in an industrial environment.

2.4 Technical Data

The following tests were taken at 15V DC and the worst case measurement was recorded over the range -20 to +50 deg C.

3 INSTALLATION

WARNING-TRIANGLE

The installation must be made by an engineer that has skills in EMC and radio frequency systems. The final installation should be in accordance with the engineering document at page http://www.aareff.com/ETR132.pdf.

3.1 MPX Input

MPX is an abbreviation for Multiplex signal. Multiplex is the name commonly used to describe the encoding of stereo audio signal band developed by Zenith / GE and used for standard stereo FM broadcasting. MPX Input also accepts simple mono audio signals and RDS (Radio Data System) or a combination thereof. The connector is RCA / phono type unbalanced with a "Hi-Z input of 10k ohms. You must use high quality shielded cable to connect the coaxial input for the other equipment. During the factory test the excitor is adjusted to give + / -75 kHz deviation FM (maximum allowed) at 88.0 MHz for +4 dBu input.

To comply with the EMC Directive the cable used to connect this input to the other equipment should not exceed 3 meters in length.

To comply with the R&TTE directive it is mandatory that the level of the MPX signal is limited with an audio peak limiter or similar processor. After the installation the deviation of the FM needs to be reviewed and adjusted so that the peak limited MPX signal gives a maximum deviation of not more than + / -75 KHz. The setting of this deviation is VR1 and shown in the picture the bottom panel. (See Figure 1)

3.2 DC Input and Auxiliary Output

DC input and auxiallry output are simply connected together inside the unit. The purpose of this is to provide access to other DC equipment in the form of a "daisy chain" and therefore share the same power supply. The current capacity of the DC connector is 5000 milliamps, so if the external power supply can provide 5000 milliamps and Driver / Exciter consumes 600 milliamps, this leaves 4400 mA of power available for other equipment using the AUX OUT DC. The DC input connectors are 5.5 mm in outer diameter and 2.1 mm diameter in the central pin. The central pin is positive and the negative or ground outside. The unit has polarity protection

When using traditional linear power supplies pay particular attention to the internal rectifying diodes by placing a 1nF ceramic disc capacitor directly across each of them. CE marked power supplies tend to be suppressed and have no problem.

To comply with the Low Voltage Directive and provide safe operation the external power supply must current limit or be fused to no more than 5 amps. This will prevent the connectors and wiring breaking down in a fault condition. We recommend that 5 amps red and black, the figure of 8 cable is used for wiring DC.

To comply with EMC directive this cable should not exceed 3 meters in length.

To comply with the R&TTE the transmitter output power needs to remain within + / - 0.5 db, therefore the power source must deliver a constant level of output voltage. The DC can be between 12 and 14.5V, but it must be with + / - 6% of nominal value over the temperature range of 15 to 30 degrees centigrade with a current consumption of 200 to 600mA. This applies to all types of power supplies including, batteries, solar panels, photo voltaics, wind generators or other innovative energy sources or a combination of the them. The AC/DC power supply needs to give a DC constant output over the AC input of 198 to 255V. To ensure the permitted level of residual AM is in compliance, the DC output ripple should not be more than 140mV.(See Figure 1)

FIG 1. REAR PANEL AND PORTS

3.3 1W 50 OHM 1W RF Output

This is the main RF output of 1W into a 50 ohm resistive load. This is used to drive an artificial load, power amplifier or antenna or other system that is designed with an input of 50 ohms. This port should always be terminated with 50 ohms when the transmitter is switched on. The lack of a termination on this port does not cause immediate damage, however, it will cause the internal amplifier to operate at high temperatures reduces the long-term life of the equipment. (See Figure 1)

4 OPERATION

4.1 Setting RF Output Power

Locate the VR2 on the lower panel of the equipment (see Figure 2). For 1 mW (minimum) turn VR2 anti-clockwise for max. attenuation. For full power output +1000 mW) turn VR2 fully clockwise to maximum. No other adjustments are necessary

4.2 Frequency Change

Select the frequency from the PLL look up table (Annex 1) and select the appropriate code in the PLL module DIP switches (S1 and S2). (See Figure 2) Connect the rear panel RF OUTPUT BNC connector to a dummy load or a RF power amplifier. Connect the transmitter to the power supply and switch on. Set the small variable capacitor VC1 slowly until the PLL UNLOCK LED begins to blink/flicker. Continue to further adjust VC1 slowly, the PLL UNLOCK LED will darken more, then the PLL LOCK LED will illuminate

4.3 Deviation Adjustment

Locate VR1 bottom panel (see Figure 2), this will adjust the total multiplex signal including the stereo pilot tone. This method should be used to adjust the deviation, after a frequency change or a change in an external stereo or RDS generator or audio limite

4.4 Frequency Fine Adjustment

In normal and most circumstances, it never requires any adjustment. If you need to adjust the carrier frequency, this can be done by turning VC2 on the bottom panel (see Figure 2). To access VC2 you must remove the foil tape. The adjustment will make a smooth analog setting the carrier frequency of approximately + / - 2000 Hz
